This is probably one of the more common reasons students blindly pick a school. Allow us to reassure you that you'll find friends wherever you go. Let us also reassure you that even if you have all your best friends around you can still be completely miserable at a school. Going back to your personality assessment, you'll want to find a school that fits your learning style and personality type. Look for an environment that is comfortable for you. What is right for your friend is not necessarily right for you.
My father and his father before him…
Again, you should select colleges that fit your personality traits and learning style. We encourage you to find what you want in life, as it is of course, your life. Be open and honest with your parents about your opinions of the school they are suggesting.
We just can't afford this school…
Most colleges discount their tuition and provide scholarships based on the strength of the student. There are also state grants and tax credits to consider. Blowing over a school based on the sticker price is just a terrible idea. If you like the school, go for it and see what shakes out.
I've never even heard of this school…
In places like Charleston, New Orleans, and San Diego, some of the best restaurants you'll find are tucked away in some back ally. Colleges can be the same way. Colleges like Butler, Davis, and Wofford are not as famous as your Dukes and Harvards, but rest assured they provide a stellar education and impressive social contacts. So take some time to get the know the college before you dismiss it based on never hearing about it on ESPN.
